Iron ore cars are a specialized type of hopper car designed exclusively to haul heavy loads of iron ore. The history of the 26- foot ore car dates back to the mid-1800s, with early models being relatively short, such as 24 feet. The introduction of vast ore deposits in the Upper Midwest in the late 19th century led to the common use of these cars. By the 1910s, demand for larger capacity increased, resulting in the first steel ore cars, which were later innovated with features like rib sides and long end platforms.
