Sectional Pullman sleepers were the mainstay of most long-distance trains, as they could carry more passengers at lower fares (and higher operating profit per car) than cars which offered private compartments and drawing rooms. A section accommodating 3 people consisted of two seats facing each other with a drop-down berth above, separated from the common center aisle by a heavy curtain at night. The most ubiquitous sectional floor plan that Pullman offered was the 12-1 sleeper, consisting of 12 sections
