This detailed Atlas Master Gold EMD GP40 Low Nose, No Dynamic Brakes diesel locomotive is based on the popular 3,000-horsepower road units introduced in the late 1960s. Production of these popular diesels ran through the early 1970s when they were succeeded by the GP40-2. Many of the GP40 carbody units are still in service in 2018, although often their interior components may have been rebuilt or upgraded.
