The EMD F-series played a pivotal role in the transition from steam to diesel power, forever changing American railroading. Originally designed for freight service, these locomotives quickly proved their versatility. While most F-units operated in freight service, many were also assigned to short-distance passenger trains. Some railroads even equipped select units with steam generators, allowing them to handle long-distance passenger service as well.
