Built in 1927 by the renowned Baldwin Locomotive Works, these "Heavy Mountain" locomotives were trailblazers, being the first 4-8-4 type acquired by the Santa Fe and the first built by Baldwin. Originally designed to burn coal, these mighty machines were converted to oil in 1936 and equipped with larger tenders to enhance their capabilities.
