Company Overview_XTRA Lease History Timeline :
1957 – XTRA Corporation becomes the nation’s first piggyback-trailer leasing company.
1961 – XTRA Corporation becomes a public company listed on the New York Stock exchange; listed as one of 20 companies in the Dow Jones Transportation Index.
1992 – XTRA Corporation creates the XTRA Lease division after merging AJF Leasing and Strick Lease into one national company.
1997 – XTRA Lease introduces industry-changing Repair Cost Standards. The often-contentious issue of damage charges is lessened thanks to technology that standardizes the approach to estimating, communicating and charging customers for damage to rented or leased trailers. To date, no competitor has replicated the investment or the approach.
In 1999 Xtra Corporation outsourced the management of its international container leasing business, XTRA International ( 230,000 TEU XTRA fleet), to Textainer Equipment Management Limited
2000 – XTRA Lease becomes the first trailer rental and leasing company to offer GPS- and cellular-based trailer tracking.
2001 – On September 20, 2001, Berkshire Hathaway, headed by the “Oracle of Omaha”, Warren Buffett, acquires all assets of XTRA Corporation.

2011 - XTRA Lease becomes the first trailer rental and leasing company to install fuel-efficient, aerodynamic side skirts on new reefers and dry vans. Combined with low rolling-resistance tires, the side skirts offer fleets a 6.5% savings in fuel efficiency, according to the EPA.
2017 - XTRA Lease introduces a new, more powerful trailer tracking service and portal, powered by SkyBitz. All dry vans and reefers are equipped with solar-powered, long-lived SkyBitz tracking units. Trailer tracking is still a free service.
2018 - XTRA Lease adds cargo sensors on all new dry vans as a free service, enabling fleets to improve turn time and collect valuable detention data.
